The city goes way, way back and has a captivating history. Louis was inhabited as early as the ninth century and featured mound architecture so unique that it is preserved today as a world heritage site.


In the seventeenth century French explorers began settling the area and by the mid eighteenth century a trading post—St. Louis—was established along the Mississippi River. Control of the settlement went back and forth between Spain and France for about half a century, but by the early nineteenth century St.

Louis was a proud American city. With the arrival of the steamboat in the early s to this day still loyally huffing and puffing up the Mississippi came a boom in population, and although the Civil War brought hard times on St. Louis, it was by the end of the century the fourth largest city in the country.

Decades of depopulation and disinvestment followed, and top down urban renewal projects threatened to destroy the once majestic city. If you love houses as much as I do, then I bet you can't click just one!

Kensington Avenue, lined with beautiful, stately homes, was constructed at great cost by MGM for the movie. Judy Garland was 21 years old when she played Esther Smith. She initially turned down the role because she was tired of playing the ingenue.

She was finally talked into it by the screenwriter, Irving Brecher, who was a friend of hers.

The movie changed her life because she met and married the director, Vincente Minnelli. Rose Smith was played by newcomer Lucille Bremer, who only spent four years in Hollywood before retiring from show business to start a family. A lot of the action takes place around this beautiful staircase in the entry: At the end of the movie, when they are packing up their belongings to move to New York, we get this view of the staircase looking kind of bleak and sad with the paintings removed: She helped the filmmakers get all of the period details right, from the clothes to the sets.

“Meet Me in St. Louis:” The Victorian on Kensington Avenue

Louis was demolished in after standing empty for years. It was built inand you can see similarities to the illustration above asking price in Back to the movie, which is so much prettier than reality… In this scene, the family gathers to discuss the move to New York City.

The dad, played by Leon Ames, has decided not to take the job in New York after all because he realizes how important home is to his family.
