The writing did take away from the overall quality of the book, I’ve never read shone Irving Stone before so I can’t really compare this to his other works. Everything has an end be it issues or people and that’s what happens with Vincent as well. It seems probable that Vincent’s letters to and from his own brother Theo provided a foundation for Adversary in the House.

Sometimes the dialogues were off, just poorly written. His poor parents and brother spend he whole time bailing him out of money troubles and women troubles and this guy just keeps whining. So, all in all, I’m glad I read this book, but won’t deny that it was a struggle to plow through. This article about a biographical or autobiographical novel of the s is a stub.

I felt removed from the characters, not really in the story. During their lifetime, Stone and his wife funded a foundation to support charitable causes they believed in. What a whiny brat VGV turns out to be. Especially since he’s not one of my favorite artists, it drove me crazy that he spent his whole life doing something that he was so passionate about, yet mediocre at.


By the end of the book, it became apparent that neither of Vincent nor Theo could live without the other.

The prose is mawkish in some spots, and the entire book is awash in cheap sentimentality. That being said, I admire the effort Irrving put into breathing life into Van Gogh’s story, and his pursuit of maintaining truth and authenticity in storytelling a lot of the content is cross-checked with Van Gogh’s letters to Theo. Or if you just want a story about the hardships of a professional painter, then go for it.
