volors The scene in the “Molly club” where John decides to give in to his lust with a rotten-toothed roughneck made me cringe, but only because I’d already come to care for the guy and hated to see him head down that path. What a fantastic book this was. There are so many issues to talk about here.

Readers of historic naval fiction may find themselves less engaged with this aspect of the book, but will still find a good adventure and an authentic historical novel which shows the Royal Navy from a slightly different perspective. John with his doubts and coming to find out who he is, and Alfie, going from the naive fool-for-love to a apex.
Beecroft also understands the socio-political structure and mores of the Eighteenth Century navy. But at least I’m writing, which is the main thing.
Normally I can’t abide Big Misunderstandings and the last half of this book hinges on them. The characters were all quite interesting and even the side-characters had some depth and refreshingly not everything was painted black or white.
